Carnival in South Tyrol: Colorful Parades and Vibrant Traditions

Carnival in South Tyrol is a celebration that lights up the region with a unique blend of tradition, creativity, and joy. The festive season officially begins on Shrove Thursday (27th February 2025) and reaches its peak on Shrove Tuesday (4th March 2025), before Ash Wednesday ushers in the Lenten period.

During this time, the streets transform into a colorful sea of festively decorated floats, costumed participants, and lively music groups. The large parades in the cities are particularly popular, as well as those in the towns of Lana and Terlan, where the people in South Tyrol come together to celebrate and enjoy this special time of the year.

In the smaller villages of South Tyrol, one can also encounter extraordinary ideas and artistically designed floats at the traditional Carnival processions, making the Carnival in this region something truly special. And of course, the delicious  “Faschingskrapfen” are a must during this time, enjoyed in various shapes and forms.

Egetmann Parade

One of the most unique spectacles is the Egetmann Parade in Tramin, one of the oldest and most extraordinary Carnival traditions in South Tyrol. This parade takes place only every two years, always in odd years – the next one will be on March 4, 2025. Thousands of spectators flock to Tramin to experience this fascinating event. The main figure is the Egetmann-Hansl, but the entire procession is an impressive blend of old customs, wild characters, and loud noise.

The sounds of wooden clappers, whips cracking, and the hammering of blacksmiths mix with the cheers of the participants and the excitement of the onlookers. The narrow streets are filled with the smells of juniper, sausages, doughnuts, and mulled wine – a complete sensory experience that captures the essence of the celebration.

The Egetmann Parade is not just a typical Carnival procession; it’s an ancient tradition deeply rooted in the history of Tramin. Once experienced, it’s a memory that will stay with you!
